486 White box

1996 – 1999

1996 I got a new desktop to use during high school

A second hand no name white box.

  • 486,
  • 8Mb Edo RAM
  • Trident 512k VGA card
  • 80Mb WD IDE drive.
  • 2400 bps (and very soon after a 14.4 Kb) modem used to dial to the highschool’s only incoming line and from there to the internet on a leased 28.8 kb line
  • ESS Audiodrive Soundcard.
  • A very good, multisync 14” AOC monitor

1997 finally woke out of the diskpace nightmare and got a WD 1.2Gb IDE drive.

1997 LG 32x cdrom drive (very, very good drive. it could read even badly scratched disks) I used it specifically for data recovery until around 2004

1998 upgraded the motherboard to a socket 7 one with a Cyrix PR166 6×86 CPU 150Mhz and 32Mb RAM. Good all round performance due to the 75Mhz bus but awful floating point performance.

1998 The AOC broke and we used for a while an old Sony Trinitron which needed special incantation’s to sync at 800×600.

1999 It went to my brother who used this machine for a couple of years and after which worked as announces player on a small neighbouring town’s cable tv station for a while.
