Shuttle SK43G NAS

2007-current

2007 bought a second hand shuttle SK43G to use as a HTPC.

  • 1.6Ghz Athlon XP
  • 512 Mb RAM
  • 2 Sata1 ports onboard + 2 sata2 ports on a pci card
  • video, fireware, usb, etc. on board

Unfortunately it’s motherboard has some issues that prevent it from installing windows (or any other operating system). Since the seller refused to take back the machine (bad deal at that point) I tried once more and managed to get it running by installing linux on a different machine and move the hdd inside this one. I configured to run as a NAS with:

  1. 640Gb WD Blue
  2. 1Tb Green + 640Gb Blue
  3. 2Tb Green
  4. 3 x 2Tb WD Green (Getting those to run with the on board sata ports + 2 PCI sata ports was a pain in the rear)

Performance is pretty bad between slow sata, 100Mb ethernet and low ram.

2011-01-17 bought two more 2Tb WD Green drives (5400RPM 64MB WD20EARS) and together with the 2TB drive from the htpc I built a proper RAID 5 array

  • 3 x 2 TB WD Green Drives
  • 1 PCI – Sata adapter

Rearrange drives between the computers (removed the 2Tb green from the HTPC and bought 2 additional ones) to have a spacious enough NAS

It’s running as close as possible to maximum. It was pretty painful to configure everything and still have it booting.

I’ll be really happy when the HP microserver is finally here so I can dispose of this annoying little machine.

2012-02-12 The HP Proliant Microserver finally arrived so I decommissioned this little annoying guy :)
